To do this, he must work the material, test the limits of its consistency, repeatedly carry out the processes of transformation, and sometimes even push them to the point of excess. In such excess, the material reveals surprisingly sensual secrets\u2014not only about itself, but also about our relationship to it, our sensory capacities, and even our own self-understanding: how we comprehend ourselves as material beings within the processes of nature. A fundamental step in this inquiry is again and again to reverse the exterior and interior of the material, to turn it inside out, to open and reseal it, to twist and invert it, to heat and cool it, to feed it, to expose its chemical consistency through other substances like acids and bases. Throughout this doing, light is cast on it, shines through it, and is withheld again\u2014so that something of its mystery may be revealed, yet remain preserved as mystery.
